Why Website Speed Matters for Customers and Search

Website speed affects whether people can use a page comfortably, especially on mobile connections. It also shapes the first impression of the business: a slow or unstable page feels less dependable before the visitor has evaluated the offer.
Speed is more than a score
A laboratory score is useful for diagnosis, but the goal is a stable, responsive experience for real users. Google describes Core Web Vitals as measures of loading performance, responsiveness and visual stability, while also warning that good scores alone do not guarantee rankings.
Common causes of slow WordPress sites
- Images uploaded at far larger dimensions than required.
- Page builders and plugins loading code on every page.
- Multiple font, advertising and tracking requests.
- Poor caching or slow server response.
- Layout shifts caused by media without reserved dimensions.
Work in the right order
Measure representative pages, identify the largest bottleneck, fix it and test again. Removing unnecessary code is often more effective than adding another optimisation plugin. Pay attention to forms, menus and consent tools as well as the homepage.
Protect function while improving performance
Optimisation should not break accessibility, analytics or checkout behaviour. Test logged-out visits, mobile devices and important conversion journeys after every material change.
